Trainees need to complete the curriculum and the FRCS examination in order to achieve a Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training (CCST) at end of training.

The Fellowship exam of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) is the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship exam taken by a Higher Specialist Trainees, normally in ST6 and is commonly known as the “Exit Exam” all trainees will continue in training for a further 2 years and it is a mandatory requirement of specialist training to have successfully passed your Fellowship exam.

Without a Fellowship exam a trainee will note receive their Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and would not be eligible for registration on the Specialist Register with the Irish Medical Council.
