Medical graduates wishing to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine must complete an internship and must competitively apply for a position on the National Emergency Medicine Training Programme (NEMTP), commencing at Core Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine (CSTEM 1 -3 yrs).
Appointed Trainees will be continuously assessed through Core Training for progression to ASTEM (Yr 4-7) whereby the trainee will compete at interview via the ASAT process (Assessment of Suitability for Advanced Training) in addition to the successful completion of the MRCEM exam and satisfactory completion of Core Training.
The application process is run through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and opens in October and closes in December each year. Successful candidates would commence Core Training on the National Emergency Medicine Training Programme in July the following year.
